Four Problems Bahamian Farmers Face

Farming in The Bahamas has many problems. List and explain FOUR problems the farmers face in The Bahamas. Give suggestions to help the farmers solve these problems Four problems farmers in The Bahamas face First: The problem that most farmers face today is the lack of Farming in knowledge the general public has about modern procedures. Modern farming procedures have less impact on the environment than methods widely used early in the 20th century.Soil erosion inhibitors, soil carbon monitoring, and water conservation and collection have all improved over time. Second: They looked down upon by locals  costs of product (seeds fertilizer etc. ) weather, availability of water, cost of equipment-purchase repair maintain, cost of labor, labor laws, length of time between commitment and maturity of any crop, organic vs. norganic fertilization, bugs As a result of the sheer number of people working the land, the country is under  severe agricultural stress, suffering from a loss of soil fertility and a high degree of erosion. Third: Farmers have trouble growing crops and commonly experience reduced yields – as a result, malnutrition. Abrupt seasonal weather changes, including floods, early frosts and winter blizzards, cause various problems for farmers, including loss of crops and stock. Farming is carried out on small plots throughout most of the islands.Only about 1% of the land area is cultivated. The nature of the terrain limits the scope of farming, which is mainly a household industry. The main crops are vegetable onions  okra and  tomatoes, the last two raised mainly for export. Fourth: They are  lack of fertile soil  so that’s a problem for them to plant good and healthy crops and it’s hard for them to make money and that’s going to be a HUGE problem for them and their country as well. Sociological Imagination -Teen Pregnancy

Sociological imagination is defined by C. Wright Mills as the â€Å"vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society†. It is the process of looking at your own life in the context of your society or community. This paper is looking at teenage pregnancy and the impact on society, and will provide a sociological imagination analysis of the individual and social impact. Being an un-married and pregnant teenager can be an incredibly challenging and scary experience especially if that child does not have a support structure. The national Campaign to prevent teen and planned pregnancy (NCPTP) reports that 3 out of every 10 children under the age of 20 become pregnant at least once, and 67% of those new families are in poverty, of which 52% are on welfare (â€Å"the national†, n. d). Being a teenage mother comes with a plethora of issue for the individual and for society. Teenage mothers lack a level of maturity that comes with age and experiences, they may try to hide the pregnancy, not take care of themselves and continue with risky behavior that could jeopardize the health of the infant and the mother. Their lack of maturity may led them to believe that everything will be alright, that they can be a great mother, that their boyfriend will eventually see the light and step up to the plate. But this is rarely the case, more often than not the child is born of low birth weight, premature or with other health conditions. Those children will probably suffer abuse, perform poorly in school and use the welfare system to help support themselves; it can become a vicious and publicly expensive cycle that is very difficult to break. A teenage mother from a lower class broken family may have a completely different experience than that of an upper class family. She may experience poor nutrition, neglect and herself be the result of a teenage mother. A lifestyle of this nature may also lead to self esteem issues, drug use and other criminal behaviors. It is not uncommon for young women in this scenario to be a member of a family on welfare, and it may actually seem normal to them to become pregnant early and to go on welfare. What we experience in our lives become normal for the small society around us and sometimes it is very difficult to move outside that circle, especially if there is abuse or a financial challenge holding them there. She has no life experience or a proper understanding of the responsibilities involved in raising a child. She is just following in the footsteps of those around her. This lack of maturity, education and vision limits how she views the impact on society. She is so caught up in her world with limited exposure outside her environment that the negative impact on society may not even cross her mind. The costs of the programs she uses like welfare need to be paid by someone, and that someone is the tax payer. In 2010 463,000 children were in foster care and it is more likely that the teenagers in foster care will end up as teenage parents; those children are also more likely to end up in foster care themselves (â€Å"teen pregnancy†, 2010). In 2004 the taxpayers needed to pay 2. 3 billion dollars to cover these costs (â€Å"teen pregnancy†, 2010). If you take this one step further and look past the total costs and go down to the individual that pays their taxes to support these programs, you may see more and more family struggle to cover the bill. It would benefit all involved if more effort was placed on education and programs to help control teenage pregnancy, and maybe we should all take a look at how sexual our society has become. Matthew Weller Educational Benefits of Private versus Public Schools There is much debate about whether private schools or public schools are the better value. The value proposition when comparing these two school types includes whether scores on standardized tests are better, whether overall grades are better, which schools provide a better bang for the buck and so forth. Reasons to Favor Private Schools When choosing education for children, are people willing to go above and beyond a better future or settle for what is offered to everyone? While public schools arent as regulated, private schools offer a safer environment which allows children to focus more on education. Some people can argue that private schooling isnt affordable like public (which doesnt cost a thing) but come of those people are the ones buying kids $15,000-20,000 cars for their first car, so why not put that money to bettering a childs future? Private schools are also more known for being better selective of hiring teachers, while public schools tend to just snatch ones available. The Scarlet Letter and Hesters Identity Essay - 786 Words

First of all, the scarlet letter stands for Hesters sin. By forcing Hester to wear the letter A on her bosom, the Puritan community not only punishes this weak young woman for her adultery but labels her identity as an adulteress and immoral human being as well. Thus the young and the pure would be taught to look at her, with the letter flaming on her chest, also as the figure, the body and the reality of sin. And the day Hester began to wear the scarlet A on her bosom is the opening of her darkness. From that moment, people, who look at her, must notice the letter A manifest itself in the red color covering not only her bosom, but her own character. The Puritans now only see the letter A, the representation of sin, scorn and hate†¦show more content†¦The sin of adultery she once made doesnt exist in the letter A any more. It has transformed from adultery into able, acceptable, and off course its made Hester the woman of pride, kindness, and respect. Hester did such an outst anding evolution that no woman in her times can: expressing self-identity, proving woman strength by showing her self-reliance and independence, revealing her goodness and kindness for people, and earning respect and pride. Together with the transformation of Hester, the scarlet letter once again symbolizes her identity as pure as an angel. Though she committed adultery and had to suffer a lot from this sin, her soul still remains in an original shape of purity. And the red color of letter A on her bosom, which once was the call of scorn, hate and bitterness towards Hester, now attracted peoples warmth, admiration and love as if it were a red burning color deep inside her heart. Hester deserves the highest recognition that the scarlet letter has done for her: a woman with a pure heart and soul of an angel. The most irony in the novel is the differences between the identity from which society assigns for Hester through the scarlet letter and the identity which she creates by herself. Though, letter A is a label of sin which people in the community try to impose on Hester, she doesnt let this Puritan view interfere her thought and feeling. On the contrast it seems that this letter also exposes theShow MoreRelated Rev. Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine free essay sample

This essay compares the political philosophy of Edmund Burke with that of his leading critic, Thomas Paine. An essay which compares the political philosophy of Edmund Burke with that of his leading critic, Thomas Paine. It argues that Burkes philosophy was less a reaction to the French Revolution than an idealization of the English constitution which was created for the purpose of disarming those in England who might have drawn upon revolutionary principles to foster change at home. Paines philosophy is distinguished from Burkes chiefly by the fact that it takes a much more critical attitude to the past. Yet as praise for Burkes philosophy seems detached from any particular enthusiasm for the late 18th-century English state, it seems that Burkes political philosophy is routinely analyzed in a way that completely abstracts it from the political order it was intended to eulogize and exempt from further change. We will write a custom essay sample on Edmund Burke and Thomas Paine or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The problem with this abstract approach is that it bestows upon Burkes philosophy the power to legitimize any political order simply because it has subsisted into a venerable old age. In other words, if the Third Reich had lasted a thousand years, it would also be entitled to similar esteem as the fruit of generations of human wisdom. It is hard, however, to see the genuine wisdom in a philosophy which blithely ratifies the past, without developing clear criteria to distinguish between the parts which might be allowed to continue to subsist without harm, and those which will only yield harm if left uncorrected.

The Boat by Alistair Macleod Essay Example For Students

The Boat by Alistair Macleod Essay The Boat by Alistair Macleod is narrated by a boy who has experienced immense grief due to the loss of his dad during his childhood. As the prose is non-fictional, the narrator revolves around his emotions and feelings about the damage done to him in first person; this allows the reader to identify and sympathize with the character since he directly shares his feelings with the reader. The significance of death is clearly shown with the help of an active voice as it is used almost throughout the passage to show how receptive and thoughtful the character is while recovering from his dreadful loss. We will write a custom essay on The Boat by Alistair Macleod specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now The death of the character’s father is of high significance; words such as â€Å"terrible fear† exhibit the anxiety concerning the death of the character’s father. Just in order to take his mind off as â€Å"he’s afraid to be alone with death†, he indulges in activities that distract him from the idea of death. The narrator has used sound imagery as he makes â€Å"loud splashing ineffectual noises† to make himself feel better. Rhyming words such as â€Å"fumbling† and â€Å"mumbling† have been used to show the uneasiness the character’s going through. The narrator uses images like â€Å"grey corpses on the overflowing ashtray† which laden with connotations of death to depict his predicament, mirroring his emotional state. Grey, as a colour is considered to be negative. He spoke about everything that was depressing. Every activity that the character did portrayed some form of negativity. The season during this phase was winter; this itself makes readers visualize gloominess, it sets a depressing mood for the whole passage. The author has used phrases like â€Å"cold walk† to portray indifference. The narrator gains sympathy as he agrees to the waitress by saying â€Å"it sure is; it really is†. The coffee he drinks is apparently â€Å"always bitter†, ‘bitter’ is a negative connotation. The phrases, â€Å"There were only echoes and shadows† and â€Å"morning’s darkness† makes readers draw bizarre melancholic images. The narrator relates between the past and the present; intricate details are sketched in his mind. He imagined the various things his father used to do and all the activities connected to him such as the shore bound men â€Å"blowing their hands† and â€Å"stomping their feet†; detailed imagery has been used here for readers to have clear picture of what the narrator’s expressing. Sooner or later the narrator does â€Å"realize† that he’s â€Å"foolishly alone†. The word, ‘foolishly’ tells us that he has always been in his own fantastical world believing that his dad was probably still with him. Reality tells him the truth as he compares what he had: the â€Å"call†, â€Å"voices†, â€Å"shapes† and the â€Å"boat† to what he has now: â€Å"shadows and echoes†, â€Å"voices from the rain† and â€Å"cuttings from and old movie†. The past contrasts with the present, as readers notice more negativity in the latter. There is clear evidence that narrator’s father is closely connected to the boat as he says, â€Å"no one waits at the base of the stairs and no boat rides restlessly in the waters†, in this phrase, he is associating the boat and presumably, his dad. The descriptions of the narrator’s father tells readers that he spent majority of his time in the sea as he â€Å"smelled of salt† and â€Å"tasted of salt†. One chief factor that reminded the narrator about his father was the â€Å"odour of salt†. The author has used sound imagery once again by inserting phrases like â€Å"sound of his rubber boots galumphing†, this allows the readers to picture a man who has a heavy, thunderous walk. Also, the rubber boots might have helped him to avoid the sand from entering considering he spent large amounts of time near the sea. The â€Å"shaggy whiteness† of his hair tells us that he was an elderly man. .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d , .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .postImageUrl , .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d , .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d:hover , .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d:visited , .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d:active { border:0!important; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d:active , .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubcd607061cb1ea0a8450a5e3da93133d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: How to Tame a Wild Tongue and The Squirrel Mother EssayAfter deep extensive reading of the passage do readers realize that the narrator is a teacher who has been low-spirited for ten wholesome years with a clear memory of intricate details regarding his father and his childhood activities. However, there are a few ambiguities. He mentions at the beginning of the second paragraph, â€Å"at such times†, it is slightly confusing about which ‘times’ is he talking about. At the beginning of the fifth paragraph he mentions, â€Å"Three or four of us†, were they just random people or similar people who he could relate to, is to some extent ambiguous. The whole passage is in present tense; this allows readers to connect immediately with what the narrator’s saying as it gives a feeling of something that’s happening while the reader is reading. Macleod has used a wide range of imagery, figurative speech, as well as appropriate diction in order to bring out his purpose and meaning to the readers. The image of the boat tends to carry out literal and figurative significance in many parts of the passage. The narrator seems afraid of death only because of his father’s death; he seemed to have been extremely close to his father. He also appears to have a lack of freedom; he wants to let go of the past and move into the present however, the fear pulls him down. Overall, the narrator is extremely expressive which helps in being effective as his meaning and feelings are put across to the readers in the best way possible.
